SUMMARY
This position is a highly skilled and experienced counselor position able to provide trauma informed treatment for more acute patients and stabilize patients in crisis. This position is actively involved in assisting the clinical supervisor and treatment attendant supervisor: This position assists the clinical supervisor to orient, evaluate and train counselor interns and new employees; assists the treatment attendant supervisor to develop and maintain a cohesive treatment attendant team, and to train new employees.

As a professional-level counselor, implements, maintains and coordinates the case management activities of a patient load.  Delivers treatment services that include individual and group counseling related to all patients including the more difficult chemical dependency patients.  Establishes and maintains patient files to WAC, RCW, CARF, NWITC policies.  Maintains time lines as indicated by NWITC policies. Coordinates services for patients with dual diagnosis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Counselor Responsibilities:

  • Ensures case management and documentation in patient records are thorough, accurate and timely as per NWITC policies and procedures, RCW’s, WACs and CARF standards.
  • Facilitates patient group therapy sessions.  Monitors patient groups to include behavior, participation, health and safety; interacts and intervenes with patients therapeutically and consistent with the treatment plan.
  • Arranges and participates in family, significant other conferences as appropriate.
  • Initiates and implements phone calls, correspondence and other interactions with patients, collateral providers, referral sources, parole and probation officers, after care providers, mental health personnel, attorneys and others as appropriate with the purpose of case planning and providing effective consistent treatment.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patient/client information.
  • Informs director of any problems potential or actual that effect safety or health of patients or staff or the success of the program. Provides input to the director to support overall excellence.
  • Reviews each clinical file every week to identify any incompletion or deficiency in writing. Reviews the mental health treatment plans for appropriateness.

Assists the Clinical Supervisor to:

  • Interacts positively with peers to build a cooperative team and enhance morale.  Builds a team relationship across the organization to enhance patient progress. Communicate respectfully and professionally modeling an effective, responsible style for patients.
  • Provides feedback and supervision of counselor interns.  Provides training regarding appropriate treatment modalities and interventions.  Provides timely, complete competency evaluations for the interns, provides feedback and documents interaction.  Implements progressive discipline with input from the Director and/or clinical supervisor as appropriate.
  • Provides timely documentation related to supporting interns’ successful completion to become a DOH licensed chemical dependency counselor.
  • Identifies vulnerabilities within the facility and between NWITC and external organizations and persons, reports them to the director and assists with the development of solutions.

Assists the TA Supervisor to:

    • Provides coaching, feedback to employees, documents interaction. Implements progressive discipline or corrective training with input for the Director as appropriate.
    • Provides conflict resolution ideas to individually or as a group.
    • Coordinates with clinical supervisor to improve communication between the clinical team and the treatment attendant team to create consistency with the patients in relationship to the rules, patient health and schedule changes.
    • Assesses the treatment attendant needs and develops plans to meet them. Assures the success and consistency of the implementation of policies, procedures and systems.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position assists in the supervision of interns and treatment attendants.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be certified as a Chemical Dependency Professional by the State of Washington. Must not be under current investigation by the Department of Health or found in noncompliance with DOH ethical standards unless successfully participating in a correction program with DOH and the Squaxin Island Tribe is in agreeance. Experience working in an area of human services with Native American patients preferred.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Master’s Degree and one years of relevant experience or Bachelor’s Degree health in human service area and three years’ relevant experience OR AA and five years of relevant experience as a certified chemical dependency professional in an organization that is a licensed chemical dependency program certified by JCHO or CARF, or is a CDP with six years of experience providing residential and/or outpatient treatment in an organization JCHO or CARF approved with one year of supervision experience. Experience providing services to patients with co-occurring disorders required.  Experience with adult patients required. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have a current, valid Washington State Driver’s License.  The successful applicant must pass a criminal history background check and must not have been convicted of a felony within the past five years.  Must be insured by the Tribe’s insurance carrier. Must complete TB test, CPR and HIV/Aids training course.

This position also requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles; frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration; and must occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, and work in outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), and run the risk of electrical shock. The noise level of this position is moderate.

This position requires the use of cleaning products that may contain caustic chemicals.  Employees are required to use vinyl or latex gloves and eye protection when using cleaning products.  The noise level and vibration is associated with operating vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers and motor vehicles.

OTHER:
The job requires the ability to work independently with limited supervision as well as part of a team.  Regular and consistent attendance is a condition of employment.  The employee must deal courteously with public, patients, and staff. Applicants should have three years of sustained recovery.  TB test, HIV/AIDS training, CPR and First Aid course required.

The successful candidate will be required to have a urinalysis for drug and alcohol screening in accordance with the Tribe’s Drug Free Workplace Policy and falls within the higher level of random testing as defined by the policy.
